Julianne Moore Accepts Zurich's Golden Icon Award and Slips Into German

Julianne Moore accepted the Golden Icon Award at the 22nd Zurich Film Festival on Friday, September 26, 2026, and she caught the room off guard by delivering part of her acceptance speech in German. The tribute is one of the festival’s headline honors, reserved for performers whose careers have shaped contemporary cinema. Moore, a fixture of American film for more than three decades, was greeted with a long ovation before she stepped to the microphone at the gala in Zurich.

Switzerland’s German-speaking setting appeared to stir old memories for the actress, who spent part of her youth in Europe. “Thank you for this wonderful honor. I know that I am in Switzerland right now, but as a teenager, I lived in Germany,” Moore told the audience. She then continued in German, joking gently about the state of her language skills, and thanked the festival for the welcome she received on the green carpet.

The award coincided with a festival screening of “The Debut,” directed by Jesse Eisenberg, in which Moore plays a reserved homemaker who is cast in a small stage role and gradually gives herself over to the craft of acting. The film marks her second collaboration with Eisenberg, following his 2022 directorial debut “When You Finish Saving the World.” The role gave Moore another turn as a woman undergoing a late transformation, a register she has returned to often in recent years.

Zurich Film Festival chief executive Christian Jungen praised the selection, calling Moore “one of the outstanding character actresses of American cinema.” Moore, who won the Academy Award for best actress for “Still Alice” in 2015, has long favored roles that reward nuance over spectacle, from “Far From Heaven” and “The Hours” to “Boogie Nights” and “May December.”

The Golden Icon has become one of the festival’s most closely watched moments, drawing Hollywood names to Switzerland each autumn. With the 22nd edition running from September 24 to October 4, Moore’s visit reinforced Zurich’s rising profile as a European launchpad for awards-season titles. For a festival still younger than many of its rivals, securing an actress of her stature counts as a notable coup.
