Prada Builds an Entire Collection Around the Skirt

Prada opened Milan Fashion Week on Tuesday, September 22, with a spring/summer 2027 show built almost entirely around a single garment: the skirt. Co-creative directors Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons sent out dozens of versions across the collection, from collegiate pleats to heavily embellished evening pieces, treating one everyday item as a subject worth a full study rather than a supporting element in a broader story.

The house framed the exercise plainly in its show notes. “The skirt as object,” they read. “For the Prada spring/summer 2027 collection, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons focus on an interrogation of this single, universal garment, through protean variation.” The premise was that small shifts in styling and proportion could change how a wearer reads to others, turning a familiar shape into a question about identity and perception.

Across roughly 63 looks, the designers ran the skirt through knife pleats, wrapped fronts, sporty nylon and crystal fringing. Many were paired with plain knitwear or simple shirting so that the lower half carried the argument, while a few styling tricks, a tucked hem here or a shifted waistline there, were enough to move a look from studious to sensual. The restraint on top kept the focus fixed where the designers wanted it.

The show set the tone for a Milan season heavy on new faces and second acts, with Prada holding its position as the week’s traditional opener and one of its most closely read collections. By narrowing the lens to one item, the label leaned into the kind of conceptual argument it is known for, and pushed back against the pull toward pure spectacle that has shaped many recent runways.

The single garment approach also carried a commercial logic. Skirts are a category shoppers understand and buy, and a collection that reframes them gives the house a clear story to sell in stores while satisfying the front row’s appetite for ideas. For a brand that trades on intellect as much as image, spring/summer 2027 offered proof that a plain object, examined closely enough, can still anchor a full collection and give buyers a single, legible message to carry out of the room.
