The Prince and Princess of Wales gave their three children a memorable day out this week, bringing Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It was the penultimate day of the event, and a milestone for the young royals: the first official public appearance in Scotland for all three, who have until now only spent private summer holidays north of the border at Balmoral.
The family threw themselves into the sport. They watched netball and took in the track cycling at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, where they spent time with the celebrated cyclist the venue is named after. William and Catherine also crossed paths with the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Edward and Sophie, who had come to watch the cycling too — a low-key royal gathering around the trackside rather than a formal set-piece.
As ever, the styling drew its own attention. The Princess of Wales wore a pleated white skirt with a striped top and a blazer, while George and Louis matched their father in shirts and trousers worn without ties, and Charlotte chose a white dress with a black pattern. It was a coordinated but relaxed family look, the kind that reads as considered without trying too hard.
The outing landed at a fitting moment, coming shortly after Catherine was named Britain’s best-dressed person of 2026 by Tatler. More than that, though, it was a gentle step forward in the children’s public lives — a first Scottish engagement folded into a genuinely fun day of sport, and a sign of how carefully their introduction to royal duties is being paced.
